The inaugural Windmill Trust Scholarship went to Esad Muftic, a refugee from Sarajevo, who possessed both outstanding talent and need. Esad Muftic arrived in Australia from Sarajevo in November 1995. In the preceding 20 years he was one of the most renowned graphic artists in his homeland.
Until 1994 he was Professor of Drawing and Graphic Art at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Sarajevo.
On arriving in Australia he was impressed by the character of the lights, the different colours of the landscape, and the flora. These impressions inspired him to change to paint as a medium.
Winning the inaugural Windmill Trust Scholarship enabled him to focus in his new art career with the much needed financial assistance it offered. He has continued to paint focusing on the Australian landscape.
